17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
This grade should not be used at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) or at very low temperatures. It provides adequate resistance to atmospheric corrosion and diluted acids or salts, with corrosion resistance equivalent to Alloy 304 or 430.
- Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food processing industry
- Pulp and paper industry
- Aerospace components (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components
- Nuclear waste casks
| Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| ASTM | A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400 |
| EURONORM | 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4 |
| AFNOR | Z5 CNU 17-4PH |
| DIN | 1.4542 |
Alloy 17-4 PH withstands corrosive attacks better than standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For stress corrosion cracking risks, higher aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C), preferably 1094°F (590°C), should be selected.
The alloy may experience crevice or pitting attack in stagnant seawater but provides excellent corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries (equivalent to 304L grade).

Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical conditions include:
| Condition | Temperature (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 | - |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 | 1170-1320 |
| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Welding: Grade 630 can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Proper design is essential to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining: Best performed in solution-treated condition, with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
