316L Stainless Steel Properties
Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, offering superior corrosion resistance compared to Grade 304. The molybdenum content provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Grade 316L, the low carbon version, is immune from sensitization and extensively used in heavy gauge welded components.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in atmospheric environments and corrosive media. Superior to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to potable water with up to 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures. Considered the standard marine grade stainless steel, though not resistant to warm seawater.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. Grade 316L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and suitable for use in temperature ranges where subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important.
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Annealing) - Heat to 1010-1120°C and cool rapidly. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Excellent weldability by all standard fusion and resistance methods. Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance - not required for 316L. Not generally weldable using oxyacetylene welding methods.
Machining
Tends to work harden if machined too quickly. Recommended: low speeds and constant feed rates. 316L is easier to machine compared to 316 due to lower carbon content.
Hot and Cold Working
Optimal hot working temperatures: 1150-1260°C (minimum 930°C). Most common cold working operations can be performed. Post-work annealing recommended for maximum corrosion resistance and stress relief.
Hardening
Does not harden in response to heat treatments. Can be hardened by cold working, resulting in increased strength.
