Material Description

Alloy 926 (also known as 1.4529, N08926, Cronifer 1925 hMo) is a premium austenitic stainless steel developed as an enhanced version of Alloy 904L (1.4539). This superaustenitic grade features a higher molybdenum concentration (6.5%) and increased nitrogen content (0.2%), providing significantly improved corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments.

This high-performance alloy displays excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, superior general corrosion resistance in both oxidizing and reducing media, and higher strength compared to standard austenitic steels. The nitrogen addition enhances austenite stability and reduces the formation of intermetallic phases, making it ideal for extreme service conditions.

Applications of Alloy 926

Thanks to its outstanding corrosion resistance properties, Alloy 926 (1.4529) is extensively used in numerous challenging industries and applications:

  • Phosphoric acid production: vaporizers, heat exchangers, tank housings
  • Chemical processing: facilities and pipework for diluted sulfuric and phosphoric acid, even when contaminated with chlorides
  • Salt extraction: concentration and crystallization plants
  • Offshore engineering: fire extinguishing systems, seawater filtration, hydraulics, injection systems
  • Oil and gas extraction: pump frames, pump lines, couplings, and wire lines
  • Power plants: condenser pipes and pipework systems with heavily contaminated cooling water
  • Flue gas desulfurization components
  • Pulp industry: facilities for bleaching phases
  • Storage and transport tanks for aggressive chemical substances
  • Flexible pipes in offshore applications

This versatile alloy performs exceptionally in environments where standard austenitic stainless steels would fail due to chloride attack, making it the material of choice for critical components in marine and chemical processing applications.

Heat Treatment

For optimal corrosion resistance, Alloy 926 requires proper heat treatment. Solution annealing should be performed at temperatures between 1,150-1,200°C (2,102-2,192°F), preferably at 1,180°C (2,156°F). The retention time during annealing depends on material thickness:

  • For thicknesses of d ≤ 10 mm: retention time t = d × 3 min/mm
  • For thicknesses of d = 10 to 20 mm: retention time t = 30 min + (d - 10 mm) × 2 min/mm
  • For thicknesses of d > 20 mm: retention time t = 50 min + (d - 20 mm) × 1 min/mm

After annealing, rapid cooling in water is recommended to achieve optimum properties. For thin materials (less than 1.5 mm), fast air cooling may be sufficient.
