Product Description
17-4PH 630 H9 Stainless Steel Round Bar
Overview

17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).

Key Characteristics
  • Precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions
  • High strength and hardness maintained up to 572°F (300°C)
  • Mechanical properties optimized through heat treatment
  • Very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi)
  • Corrosion resistance equivalent to Alloy 304 or 430 in many environments
Applications
  • Offshore equipment (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
  • Food processing industry components
  • Pulp and paper manufacturing equipment
  • Aerospace components (turbine blades)
  • Mechanical components and nuclear waste casks
  • Engine components and boat propeller shafts
  • Plastic molding dies, valves, and gears
Standards Compliance
  • ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
  • EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
  • AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
  • DIN 1.4542
  • Japanese JIS SUS 630

Alternative Material Comparison
Alternative Grade Selection Considerations
431Higher toughness, better availability in some sizes
416Free-machining martensitic steel, better for repetition machining, lower cost
316Higher corrosion resistance but much lower strength
2205Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength (but higher than 316)
Heat Treatment

Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.

Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical conditions include:

Condition Temperature (°C) Time (h) Typical Hardness (HRC)
H900482144
H925496442
H1025552438
H1150621433
Fabrication Properties

Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Design carefully to prevent weldment stresses.

Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.

Corrosion Resistance

17-4PH withstands corrosive attacks better than standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance, aging temperatures above 550°C are recommended.
