Material Description
What Is 0Cr13Ni5Mo Stainless Steel Bar?
0Cr13Ni5Mo is a martensitic stainless steel grade renowned for its exceptional balance of high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Widely used in critical industrial applications, this alloy is recognized for its ability to withstand harsh environments while maintaining structural integrity. In international standards, it may be equivalent to grades like ASTM A240 Type 415 or UNS S41500, though regional specifications may vary.
Chemical Composition of 0Cr13Ni5Mo
Key chemical elements (in weight percentage):
- Carbon (C): ≤0.05%
- Chromium (Cr): 12.0-14.0%
- Nickel (Ni): 4.5-5.5%
- Molybdenum (Mo): 0.5-1.0%
- Manganese (Mn): ≤1.0%
- Silicon (Si): ≤0.75%
- Phosphorus (P): ≤0.04%
- Sulfur (S): ≤0.03%
Chromium provides corrosion resistance, nickel enhances toughness and weldability, and molybdenum improves strength and resistance to pitting corrosion.
Mechanical Properties
Typical mechanical properties after quenching and tempering:
- Tensile Strength: ≥780 MPa (113 ksi)
- Yield Strength: ≥620 MPa (90 ksi)
- Elongation at Break: ≥15%
- Hardness: 22-32 HRC
- Impact Toughness: ≥50 J (at room temperature)
These properties make it suitable for high-stress applications requiring resistance to both mechanical load and corrosion.
Corrosion Resistance
0Cr13Ni5Mo exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in:
- Atmospheric conditions
- Freshwater and seawater environments
- Mild acidic or alkaline solutions
- Chloride-containing media (better than standard martensitic steels)
While not as corrosion-resistant as austenitic grades like 316L, its martensitic structure allows heat treatment for tailored strength, making it ideal for applications where both durability and resistance to moderate corrosion are critical.
Fabrication and Heat Treatment
- Machinability: Good machinability when annealed; proper lubrication and tooling are recommended for optimal results.
- Weldability: Can be welded using TIG, MIG, or submerged arc welding. Preheating (100-200°C) and post-weld tempering (600-650°C) are advised to prevent hydrogen cracking.
- Heat Treatment Steps:
- Annealing: 800-850°C, slow cooling to improve ductility
- Quenching: 950-1050°C, oil or air cooling to achieve martensitic structure
- Tempering: 200-650°C (adjusted based on required hardness-toughness balance)
Common Applications of 0Cr13Ni5Mo Stainless Steel Bar
- Marine Engineering: Ship propeller shafts, offshore platform components, and seawater pumps
- Oil & Gas Industry: Valves, wellhead equipment, and pipelines in mildly corrosive environments
- Aerospace: Landing gear components, structural parts, and fasteners
- Hydraulic Systems: High-pressure cylinders and shafts
- Chemical Processing: Equipment for non-aggressive chemical media
- Military & Defense: Armor components and tactical gear
Advantages of 0Cr13Ni5Mo Stainless Steel
- High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Suitable for lightweight, load-bearing structures
- Toughness in Low Temperatures: Maintains ductility in cold environments
- Weldability with Proper Procedures: Enables complex component fabrication
- Cost-Effective vs. High-Nickel Alloys: Balances performance and affordability
- Customizable Properties: Heat treatment allows tailoring for specific applications
