Material Overview
17-4PH Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This material maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
Key Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).

Alternative Grade Comparison
| Alternative Grade | Comparison to 17-4PH |
|---|---|
| 431 | Higher toughness, better availability in some sizes |
| 416 | Free-machining martensitic stainless steel, better for repetition machining, lower cost |
| 316 | Higher corrosion resistance but much lower strength |
| 2205 | Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength (but not as low as 316) |
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment involves heating at 1040°C for 0.5 hours followed by air cooling to 30°C. Age hardening at various temperatures achieves required mechanical properties:
| Condition | Hardening Temp (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Annealed | - | 36 | 1100 |
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 | - |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 | 1170-1320 |
| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Processing Characteristics
Welding
Grade 630 stainless steels can be welded using all conventional methods without requiring pre-heating. Proper design considerations are essential to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining
These steels can be machined in their solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steels.
