Material Description
17-4PH Stainless Steel (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. High strength is maintained to approximately 600°F (316°C).
General Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with Cu and Nb/Cb additions. The grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized with heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
Applications & Standards
Applications:
- Offshore (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food industry
- Pulp and paper industry
- Aerospace (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components
- Nuclear waste casks
Standards:
- ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
- EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
- AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
- DIN 1.4542

Alternative Grades Comparison
| Grade | Comparison to 17-4PH |
|---|---|
| 431 | Higher toughness, better availability in some sizes |
| 416 | Free-machining martensitic stainless steel, better for repetition machining, lower cost |
| 316 | Higher corrosion resistance but much lower strength |
| 2205 | Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength (but not as low as 316) |
Technical Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 630 stainless steels have good corrosion resistance in many environments, comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. They exhibit improved resistance against stress corrosion cracking when aged at 550°C or higher.
Heat Resistance
Good resistance to oxidation, but long-time exposure to temperatures of 370-480°C should be avoided to prevent loss of toughness. Should not be used above age-hardening temperature to avoid reduction of hardness and mechanical properties.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment at 1040°C for 0.5h followed by air-cooling. Age-hardening at low temperatures achieves required mechanical properties with typical shrinkage of 0.10% for condition H1150 and 0.05% for condition H900.
Welding & Machining
Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Machining is best performed in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 steels.
