About 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, second in importance to 304. The molybdenum content provides superior corrosion resistance compared to Grade 304, particularly against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316, making it immune to sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it ideal for heavy gauge welded components (over 6mm). There is typically no significant price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.
The austenitic structure provides excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in atmospheric environments and many corrosive media - generally superior to 304. Resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking above 60°C. Suitable for potable water with up to 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to 500 mg/L at 60°C.
Considered the standard "marine grade stainless steel," though not resistant to warm seawater. In marine environments, may exhibit surface corrosion visible as brown staining, particularly in crevices and rough surfaces.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. Continuous use in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is critical. Grade 316L offers better resistance to carbide precipitation in this temperature range.
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Annealing) - Heat to 1010-1120°C and cool rapidly. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Excellent weldability using all standard fusion and resistance methods, with or without filler metals. Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance - not required for 316L. Not generally weldable using oxyacetylene methods.
Machining
Tends to work harden if machined too quickly. Recommended: low speeds and constant feed rates. Easier to machine compared to 316 stainless steel due to lower carbon content.
Hot and Cold Working
Hot working: optimal temperatures 1150-1260°C (minimum 930°C). Cold working: suitable for shearing, drawing, and stamping. Post-work annealing recommended for maximum corrosion resistance and stress relief.
Hardening
Does not harden through heat treatments. Can be hardened by cold working, resulting in increased strength.
Typical Applications
  • Food preparation equipment in chloride environments
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Marine applications
  • Architectural components
  • Medical implants (pins, screws, orthopedic implants)
  • Fasteners and hardware
