17-4 Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel (Type 630, UNS S17400) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
- High strength and hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C)
- Excellent mechanical properties through heat treatment
- Very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi)
- Corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 or 430
- Optimized mechanical properties through precipitation hardening
- Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food processing industry equipment
- Pulp and paper industry machinery
- Aerospace components (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components and nuclear waste casks
- Engine components and boat propeller shafts
- Plastic molding dies, valves, and gears
- ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
- EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
- AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
- DIN 1.4542

Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties with minimal distortion.
| Condition | Hardening Temp (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ann | - | 36 | 1100 |

| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating requirements.
Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
17-4PH stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels, comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For optimal performance in chloride or H2S media, specific aging temperatures are recommended.
