Material Description
17-4PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized with heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
Applications
- Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food industry equipment
- Pulp and paper industry machinery
- Aerospace components (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components
- Nuclear waste casks
Standards
- ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
- EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4

Corrosion Resistance
17-4PH stainless steel withstands corrosive attacks better than standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. It demonstrates improved resistance against stress corrosion cracking when aged at 550°C or higher. The alloy is corrosion resistant in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment involves heating to 1040°C for 0.5 hours followed by air cooling. Age hardening at various temperatures achieves the required mechanical properties:
| Condition | Hardening Temp (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ann | - | 36 | 1100 |
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 | - |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 | 1170-1320 |
| H1025 | 552 | 4 | 38 | 1070-1220 |
| H1075 | 580 | 4 | 36 | 1000-1150 |
| H1100 | 593 | 4 | 35 | 970-1120 |
| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Processing Characteristics
Welding
17-4PH can be welded using all conventional methods without requiring pre-heating. Care should be taken in designing and welding high-strength steels to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining
This alloy can be machined in its solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
Applications
- Engine components
- High strength boat propeller shafts
- Plastic moulding dies
- Valves and gears
