Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).

Alloy 17-4 PH provides superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels and performs comparably to Alloy 304 in most environments. For applications with potential stress corrosion cracking risks, aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended. The material demonstrates excellent resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries.
Solution treatment involves heating to 1040°C for 0.5 hours followed by air cooling. Age hardening at specific temperatures achieves desired mechanical properties. The material should not be used above age-hardening temperatures to prevent reduction of hardness and mechanical properties.
