Material Characteristics
AISI 431 is a high chromium-low nickel martensitic stainless steel with excellent hardenability, high strength, and good corrosion resistance. Typically supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range 850-1000 MPa.
- Excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric environments
- Good resistance to mild marine and industrial atmospheres
- Resistant to organic materials, nitric acid, and petroleum products
- High tensile and yield strength with excellent toughness
- Capable of through hardening up to Rc44
- Responds well to nitriding processes
Available Sizes & Finishes
Stocked sizes range from 6.35mm to 260mm diameter. Available finishes include peeled, cold drawn, turned and polished, and centreless ground.
International Specifications
| Country | Standard | Designation |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | AS 2837-1986 | 431 |
| Germany | W.Nr 1.4057 | X20CrNi17 2 |
| Great Britain | BS970 Part3 1991 | 431S29 |
| Japan | JIS G4303 | SuS 431 |
| USA | ASTM A276-98b | 431 |
Typical Applications
Glass molds, aircraft components, bolts and nuts, fasteners, pump shafts, propeller shafts, studs, and valve parts. Material is magnetic in all conditions.
Important Note: Tempering within the range 370°C - 565°C should be avoided due to significant drop in impact properties. For optimum corrosion resistance, ensure surfaces are free of scale and foreign particles, and consider passivation for finished parts.
