Introduction

304L stainless steel strips, conforming to ASTM A666 standard, with UNS S30403 material number and also known as Alloy 1.4306 in some regions, are highly versatile and widely used in various industries. The strips, with a thickness range of 0.3 - 3.0mm and a cold - rolled 2B surface finish, possess unique properties that make them stand out in the market.

Chemical Composition

304L is a low - carbon variant of 304 stainless steel. The low carbon content (≤0.03%) is crucial as it significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, thereby enhancing the material's resistance to intergranular corrosion. In addition to carbon, its main alloying elements include:
  • Chromium (Cr): 18.0 - 20.0%. Chromium forms a passive oxide layer on the surface of the steel, which provides excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Nickel (Ni): 9.0 - 13.0%. Nickel helps to stabilize the austenitic structure of the steel, improving its toughness, ductility, and corrosion resistance, especially in reducing environments.
  • Other elements such as manganese (Mn ≤ 2.00%), silicon (Si ≤ 1.00%), phosphorus (P ≤ 0.045%), and sulfur (S ≤ 0.03%) are also present in controlled amounts to ensure the overall quality and performance of the steel.

Physical and Mechanical Properties

Physical Properties

  • Density: The density of 304L stainless steel is approximately 7.93 g/cm³. This density value is important for calculating weights and volumes in applications where material quantity and mass are critical.
  • Melting Point: It has a melting point range of 1400 - 1450°C. Understanding the melting point is essential for processes such as welding, forging, and casting.
  • Thermal Conductivity: With a thermal conductivity of about 15.0 W/(m·K), 304L stainless steel has relatively low heat transfer compared to some other metals. This property can be advantageous in applications where heat insulation or controlled heat transfer is required.
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: The coefficient of thermal expansion for 304L in the range of 20 - 100°C is 17.2 μm/m°C. This information is crucial when designing components that will be subjected to temperature changes, as it helps to predict dimensional changes and avoid issues such as thermal stress and distortion.

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength: The minimum tensile strength of 304L stainless steel is typically ≥520 MPa. This indicates its ability to withstand pulling forces without breaking.
  • Yield Strength: The yield strength is ≥205 MPa, which represents the stress at which the material begins to deform plastically.
  • Elongation: It has an elongation of ≥40%, demonstrating its good ductility, which allows it to be easily formed into various shapes through processes like bending, stamping, and drawing.
  • Hardness: The hardness of 304L stainless steel in the annealed condition is relatively low, with values such as ≤187HB (Brinell hardness), ≤90HRB (Rockwell B hardness), and ≤200HV (Vickers hardness). However, the hardness can be increased through cold working processes.

Specifications

  • Thickness: The strips are available in a thickness range of 0.3 - 3.0mm. This thickness range provides flexibility for different applications, from thin - walled components that require light - weight materials to thicker parts that need to withstand higher mechanical loads.
  • Width: The width of the strips can vary depending on the manufacturer and customer requirements, but common widths are available to suit different production needs.
  • Surface Finish: The cold - rolled 2B surface finish is a smooth finish produced by cold rolling, annealing, and descaling. After annealing, a light cold rolling pass with polished rolls is added, giving it a brighter finish than the 2D finish. This surface finish is widely used as it offers a good combination of aesthetics and functionality, being suitable for applications where a relatively smooth surface is required, such as in decorative applications and some food - processing equipment.

Standards

304L stainless steel strips comply with ASTM A666 standard. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards ensure that the material meets specific quality and performance requirements. This standard covers the requirements for annealed or cold - worked austenitic stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip. Compliance with this standard gives customers confidence in the quality, consistency, and reliability of the 304L stainless steel strips in terms of chemical composition, mechanical properties, and surface quality.

Equivalent Grades

  • In the Japanese standard, it is equivalent to SUS304L.
  • In the European standard, it is known as 1.4306.
  • In the Chinese standard, it is similar to 022Cr19Ni10.
These equivalent grades may have slight differences in specific requirements, but they generally share the same basic characteristics and applications as 304L stainless steel.

Applications

  • Food and Beverage Industry: Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and hygienic properties, 304L stainless steel strips are widely used in food processing equipment such as conveyors, tanks, and food containers. The smooth 2B surface finish is easy to clean and sanitize, meeting the strict hygiene standards of the food industry.
  • Chemical Industry: It can resist the corrosion of many chemicals, including acids, alkalis, and salts. As a result, it is used in chemical reactors, pipelines, and storage tanks. The low - carbon content of 304L makes it especially suitable for applications where welding is involved, as it reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion in the welded areas.
  • Architecture and Construction: 304L stainless steel strips are used for decorative purposes, such as in facades, handrails, and interior design elements. The cold - rolled 2B surface finish provides an attractive appearance, and the material's corrosion resistance ensures long - term durability, even in outdoor environments.
  • Automotive Industry: It is used in automotive exhaust systems, where it needs to withstand high temperatures and corrosive gases. The good formability of 304L allows it to be easily shaped into complex components required for exhaust systems.
  • Medical Equipment: 304L stainless steel is biocompatible and corrosion - resistant, making it suitable for some medical equipment applications, such as surgical instruments and medical device housings.
