1. Introduction
Alloy 301 (EN 1.4310) stainless steel strips are metastable austenitic chromium-nickel steels renowned for exceptional work-hardening capability and high strength-to-weight ratios. When cold-rolled to thicknesses like 0.3mm–0.8mm, these strips balance ductility and hardness, making them ideal for weight-sensitive applications such as automotive springs, electronics, and conveyor systems. Unlike 304 stainless steel, 301 has lower Cr/Ni content (Cr 16–18%, Ni 6–8%), which enhances strain hardening but reduces corrosion resistance in acidic/chloride environments. After cold processing, it exhibits magnetic properties and absorbs impact energy via deformation-induced hardening, improving safety in structural components.
2. Chemical Composition (%)
Element | Carbon (C) | Silicon (Si) | Manganese (Mn) | Chromium (Cr) | Nickel (Ni) | Phosphorus (P) | Sulfur (S) |

3. Mechanical Properties Across Hardness Grades
Mechanical properties vary significantly with cold-working levels. Below are typical values for strips in thicknesses 0.3–0.8mm:
Hardness Grade | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HV) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Soft (Annealed) | ≥520 | ≥205 | ≥40 | 150–200 |
1/4 Hard (1/4H) | 750–1,050 | 450–850 | 25–35 | 250–320 |
1/2 Hard (1/2H) | 900–1,200 | 700–1,000 | 15–25 | 320–380 |
Full Hard (H) | 1,000–1,400 | 900–1,200 | 8–15 | 380–420 |
Extra Hard (EH) | 1,400–1,600 | 1,200–1,400 | 5–10 | 450–520 |
Super Hard (SH) | 1,600–2,000 | 1,400–1,800 | 3–8 | 530–600 |
