About Grade 321 Stainless Steel
Alloy 321 (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel that offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C).
The addition of titanium stabilizes the alloy against chromium carbide formation, making it particularly advantageous for high-temperature applications. Alloy 321 stainless steel offers superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to Alloy 304 and 304L.
This alloy maintains excellent resistance to oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and possesses good low-temperature toughness. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment but can be strengthened through cold working. Alloy 321 can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Alloy 321H (UNS S32109) is the higher carbon (0.04-0.10) version developed for enhanced creep resistance and higher strength at temperatures above 1000°F (537°C).
