Material Overview
Stainless steel grade 301 is typically supplied as strips and wires with tensile strength reaching 1800 MPa, available in tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. Through controlled analysis, grade 301 maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions, making it suitable for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures. Tempers from ¾ to full hard are ideal for applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs.
Grade 301L, the low carbon variant, offers superior ductility for forming applications. Grade 301LN contains higher nitrogen content and exhibits increased work hardening rates compared to standard 301. While only grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666, 301L conforms to JIS G4305 and 301LN to EN10088-2 as grade 1.4318.

Technical Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 stainless steel offers corrosion resistance comparable to grade 304, providing excellent performance in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Exhibits good oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing is performed at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperature ranges. Thermal hardening is not suitable for this grade.
Cold Working
Grade 301 and its low carbon variants are primarily used as high-strength stainless steels with exceptionally high work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area). Cold rolling and roll forming operations can achieve high strengths while maintaining residual ductility for severe cold deformation. The alloy is non-magnetic when annealed but becomes strongly magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Suitable for all standard welding methods using grade 308L as filler metal. Welded parts require annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, though 301L and 301LN variants do not require post-weld annealing. Spot welding effectively assembles cold rolled 301 components without compromising overall strength.
Applications
  • Rail car structural components
  • Air frame sections
  • Highway trailer components
  • Automotive wheel covers
  • Wiper blade clips and holders
  • Stove element clips
  • Screen frames
  • Toaster springs
  • Curtain walls
