Other Grades:
201, 202, 301, 304, 304L, 309S, 310S, 316L, 410, 420, 430, 440
Minimum Order:
300 Kgs
Grade 301 stainless steel is typically supplied as strips and wires, achieving tensile strengths up to 1800 MPa across tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. Through controlled analysis, this grade maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions, making it suitable for aircraft components, rail car structures, and architectural applications. Higher tempers (¾ to full hard) provide excellent wear resistance and spring characteristics for simple form designs.
Grade Variants
301L: Low carbon variant offering superior ductility for demanding forming applications.
301LN: Higher nitrogen content variant with increased work hardening rate, specified in EN10088-2 as grade 1.4318.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel, providing reliable performance in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing utilizes lower temperature ranges. Thermal hardening is not suitable for this grade.
Cold Working
Grade 301 and its low carbon variants are primarily used as high-strength stainless steels with exceptional work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area). Cold rolling and forming operations can achieve high strengths while maintaining residual ductility. The alloy transitions from non-magnetic in annealed condition to strongly magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Compatible with all standard welding methods using 308L filler metal. Post-weld annealing is recommended for grade 301 to maximize corrosion resistance, while 301L and 301LN variants do not require annealing. Spot welding effectively assembles cold-rolled components without compromising strength.
Applications
- Rail car structural components
- Air frame sections
- Highway trailer components
- Automotive wheel covers
- Wiper blade clips and holders
- Stove element clips
- Screen frames
- Toaster springs
- Curtain walls
