About 904L Stainless Steel

Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel contains added copper to improve resistance to strong reducing acids like sulphuric acid. The material offers excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion, and is non-magnetic with superior formability, toughness, and weldability.

While 904L contains high amounts of expensive ingredients like molybdenum and nickel, many applications now use cost-effective duplex stainless steel 2205 as an alternative. Grade 904L provides excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack, with its high nickel content contributing to exceptional stress corrosion cracking resistance.
