Product Overview
Why ASTM A240 316H? Key Advantages
- ✅ Superior high-temperature strength vs. 316/316L
- ✅ Excellent resistance to oxidation up to 870°C (1600°F)
- ✅ Outstanding corrosion resistance in chloride, acidic, and sulfidic environments
- ✅ Full compliance with ASME BPVC Section II for pressure-retaining parts
- ✅ Weldable with proper procedures—retains integrity in post-weld high-temp service

Performance in Target Industries
1. Petrochemical & Refining Applications
- Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
- Sulfuric and hydrochloric acids
- Chloride-laden process streams
- Reactor shells and internals
- Heat exchangers and reboilers
- Distillation columns
- Sour gas service piping supports
2. Power Generation

High-Temperature Capabilities
| Service Condition | Maximum Temperature |
|---|---|
| Continuous Oxidizing | 870°C (1600°F) |
| Intermittent Oxidizing | 925°C (1700°F) |
| Creep-Critical Service | 550–750°C (1022–1382°F) |
- At 700°C: ~35 MPa for 10,000 hours
- At 650°C: ~55 MPa for 10,000 hours
Fabrication Guidelines
- Welding: Use low heat input; filler metals like ER316H or ER316L (for thin sections). Post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary but may be applied in severe corrosion service.
- Forming: Excellent cold-forming capability; anneal after severe deformation (>20% reduction).
- Machining: Requires sharp tools, slow speeds, and ample coolant due to work-hardening tendency.
- Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1040–1150°C (1900–2100°F), followed by rapid quenching.
⚠️ Avoid prolonged exposure between 425–860°C (800–1600°F) to prevent sensitization unless stabilized alternatives are required.

Comparison: 316H vs. Common Alternatives
| Grade | Carbon (%) | Best For | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 316H | 0.04–0.10 | High-temp strength (>500°C) | Not ideal for severe welding without controls |
| 316L | ≤0.03 | Welded corrosion service | Lower creep strength |
| 321 | ~0.08 | Stabilized for welding | Lower Mo = less pitting resistance |
| 347 | ~0.08 | High-temp stabilized | Higher cost, niobium inclusion risks |
