Alloy 347/347H Stainless Steel Overview
Alloy 347 (S34700) is a stabilized stainless steel offering excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures between 800-1500°F (427-816°C). Stabilized by columbium and tantalum additions, it provides superior high-temperature mechanical properties with higher creep and stress rupture capabilities compared to Alloy 304 and 304L.
General Properties
Alloy 347 (UNS S34700) is a columbium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with good general corrosion resistance and enhanced performance in strong oxidizing conditions compared to 321 stainless. It maintains excellent intergranular corrosion resistance after exposure to 800-1500°F (427-816°C) and offers good oxidation resistance and creep strength up to 1500°F (816°C).
Alloy 347H (UNS S34709) features higher carbon content (0.04-0.10) for enhanced creep resistance and higher strength above 1000°F (537°C). The alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working, and can be easily welded using standard fabrication practices.
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 347 stainless steel exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless, with superior performance in the 800-1500°F temperature range where unstabilized alloys suffer intergranular attack. It performs better than Alloy 321 in strongly oxidizing environments up to 1500°F (816°C).
Suitable for nitric solutions, most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures, and pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures. Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service. Not recommended for chloride solutions or sulfuric acid applications.
