Engineering Insight: For aerospace landing gear or turbine blades, H900 provides maximum strength. For nuclear valve stems or surgical tools where toughness and stress-corrosion resistance are prioritized, H1150 is preferred.

Solution Annealing:
- Temperature: 1020–1060°C
- Cooling: Rapid quench (water or air) to retain martensitic structure.
- Resulting hardness: ≤ 38 HRC (machinable condition).

Aging (Precipitation Hardening):
- Typical cycles: 480°C to 620°C for 1–4 hours, followed by air cooling.
- No further quenching required—aging is performed directly from ambient or preheated state.
Caution: Avoid prolonged exposure between 350–450°C, where spinodal decomposition may cause embrittlement due to G-phase (Ni₁₆Si₇Mn₆) formation along grain boundaries.

- Machining: Best performed in the solution-treated (soft) condition. Use carbide tools, low cutting speeds, and ample coolant to avoid work hardening.
- Welding: Preheat to 100–150°C if needed; post-weld aging restores strength in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
- Forming: Limited cold formability due to martensitic structure—warm forming (>200°C) recommended for complex shapes.
- Surface Enhancement: Laser peening, nitriding (≤400°C), or shot peening can further improve fatigue life and surface hardness.
