34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel Overview
34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel is a heat treatable, low alloy steel used for a wide range of engineering parts. It is capable of being heat treated to produce a typical tensile strength of 1000-1200 N/mm², combined with good ductility and resistance to shock. This material features excellent hardenability, enabling it to be used for medium tensile strengths in fairly large sections, and attain good wear resistance with excellent impact properties at low temperatures. The material is readily machinable, allowing components to be put into service without the cost of further treatment. It can also be supplied in the annealed condition for increased machinability, requiring hardening and tempering. Typically supplied in the hardened and tempered condition with hardness 28-34HRC.

Heat Treatment
Quenched and Tempered (Q+T) of 34CrNiMo6 Steel
  • Heat 34CrNiMo6 round steel slowly to the temperature of 850°C
  • Soak at this hardening temperature and quench in oil
  • Temper as soon as 34CrNiMo6 steels reach room temperature
  • Heat uniformly to the suitable temperature
  • Withdraw from the furnace and cool in the air
  • The usual tempering temperature is 600°C, depending on actual requirements

Hot forming temperature: 1100-900°C
Machinability
Machining is best done with this 1.6582 alloy steel in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. It can be machined by all conventional methods.
Welding
The alloy materials can be fusion or resistance welded. Preheat and post heat weld procedures should be followed when welding this alloy by established methods.

EN DIN 34CrNiMo6 steel is used to make tools which demand good plasticity and high strength. It is typically selected for large size and important parts, including:
