Material Overview: Grades 321 and 347 are basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilized by Titanium (321) or Niobium (347) additions. These grades resist intergranular corrosion after heating within 425-850°C. Grade 321 is ideal for applications up to 900°C, offering high strength, scaling resistance, phase stability, and subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance.
Grade 321H
A modification of 321 with higher carbon content for improved high-temperature strength.
Welding Considerations
Grade 321 is not recommended as a welding consumable due to poor titanium transfer across high-temperature arcs. Grade 347 is the standard consumable for welding 321, as niobium performs the same carbide stabilization task effectively.
Material Properties
Like other austenitic grades, 321 and 347 offer excellent forming and welding characteristics, outstanding toughness even at cryogenic temperatures, and do not require post-weld annealing. Note: Grade 321 does not polish well and is not recommended for decorative applications.
