Grades 321 and 347 are the basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilized by Titanium (321) or Niobium (347) additions. These grades resist intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C. Grade 321 is ideal for applications up to 900°C, offering high strength, scaling resistance, phase stability, and subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance.

Grade 321H features higher carbon content for improved high-temperature strength. Note that 321 is not recommended as a welding consumable due to poor titanium transfer across high-temperature arcs; grade 347 is preferred for welding 321.

Like other austenitic grades, 321 and 347 offer excellent forming and welding characteristics, can be brake or roll-formed easily, and have outstanding weldability without requiring post-weld annealing. They maintain excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Grade 321 does not polish well and is not recommended for decorative applications.
