Grade 430 Stainless Steel Overview
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable ferritic steel containing straight chromium, known for excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and practical mechanical properties. Suitable for various chemical applications and available in bar form as grade 430F for automatic screw machines.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 430 offers excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance and good corrosion resistance to numerous substances. Maximum corrosion resistance is achieved in well-polished or buffed conditions, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance comparable to grade 304.
Heat Resistance
Capable of resisting oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. May become brittle when heated for extended periods in the 400-600°C range, remedied through annealing.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing at 815-845°C (1499-1553°F) with slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) followed by rapid air cooling. Sub-critical annealing at 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) with air or water quenching. Not hardenable by thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating required at 150-200°C (302-392°F). Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) recommended if embrittlement occurs. Recommended filler rods: 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on application requirements.
Machining & Fabrication
Easier machining than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, with potential for galling. Grade 430F offers superior machinability. Excellent bending and forming capabilities with low work hardening rate, though low ductility limits rigorous operations.
Industrial Applications
- Dish washer linings
- Refrigerator cabinet panels
- Element supports and fasteners
- Stove trim rings and chimney liners
- Automotive trim and lashing wires
