430 Stainless Steel Introduction
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. Known for its good corrosion resistance and formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties, it can be used in various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically provided in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 has similar properties to grade 430, although it is a molybdenum-bearing version that enhances corrosion resistance.

Alternative Grades
| Grade | Reasons for choosing alternative |
|---|---|
| 430F | Higher machinability needed in bar product, reduced corrosion resistance acceptable |
| 434 | Better pitting resistance required |
| 304 | Slightly higher corrosion resistance needed with improved welding and cold forming ability |
| 316 | Much better corrosion resistance needed with improved welding and cold forming ability |
| 3CR12 | Lower corrosion resistance acceptable in cost-critical applications |
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, have excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 provides good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum resistance achieved in well-polished or buffed condition. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304. 430F, being a high-sulfur free machining grade, has comparatively lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than non-free machining grades.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. It may become brittle at room temperature, particularly when heated for extended periods in the 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range, which can be mitigated through annealing.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing involves heating grade 430 to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) and rapid air-cooling. Slow cooling between 540-400°C (1004-752°F) may cause embrittlement.
For sub-critical annealing, heat to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F), followed by air-cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Welding requires pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F). If embrittlement occurs in welded metal, post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) can be performed, though grain refinement will not occur. Recommended filler rods include grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on application requirements.
Machining
Grade 430 offers easier machinability than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. Lightly drawn bars machine more easily than annealed bars. Grade 430F is specifically designed for easy machining.
Fabrication
Grade 430's low work hardening rate facilitates easy bending and forming. However, its low ductility rate limits rigorous operations. Grade 430 wire can handle rigorous cold heading, with sub-critical intermediate annealing potentially required for extreme cold working.
Applications
- Dish washer linings
- Refrigerator cabinet panels
- Element supports and fasteners
- Stove trim rings and chimney liners
- Automotive trim and lashing wires
