430 Stainless Steel Introduction
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. This material is recognized for its excellent corrosion resistance, superior formability, and practical mechanical properties, making it suitable for various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically supplied in bar form for automatic screw machine applications, while grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content.
Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of grade 430 stainless steel meets the following specifications:

Alternative Grades
| Grade | Reasons for Choosing Alternative |
|---|---|
| 430F | Higher machinability needed in bar product with acceptable reduced corrosion resistance |
| 434 | Better pitting resistance required |

| 316 | Superior corrosion resistance required with enhanced welding and cold forming abilities |
| 3CR12 | Lower corrosion resistance acceptable for cost-critical applications |
Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, demonstrate excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 provides good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum performance achieved in well-polished or buffed conditions. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent service and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous service. Embrittlement may occur at room temperature after prolonged exposure to 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range, which can be mitigated through annealing.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing involves heating to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) and rapid air cooling. Sub-critical annealing requires heating to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) with subsequent air cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F) is required before welding. Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) can address embrittlement in welded areas. Recommended filler rods include grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on application requirements.
Machining & Fabrication
Grade 430 offers superior machinability compared to standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. The material features a low work hardening rate that facilitates bending and forming operations, though low ductility may limit rigorous operations. Sub-critical intermediate annealing may be necessary for extreme cold working applications.
Applications
- Dish washer linings
- Refrigerator cabinet panels
- Element supports and fasteners
- Stove trim rings and chimney liners
- Automotive trim and lashing wires
