Introduction
Why S41500 for Turbine Applications?
- High yield and tensile strength after heat treatment (typically H1025 or H1150)
- Low carbon content (≤0.06%), minimizing weld cracking and enabling post-weld use without immediate re-heat treatment in many cases
- Good resistance to cavitation erosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in freshwater systems
- Proven track record in runner blades, shafts, guide vanes, and other critical rotating parts

Typical Applications
- Hydroelectric Power Plants: Runner blades, crown rings, stay vanes, shafts
- Pump Components: Impellers, casings in freshwater or mildly aggressive media
- Marine Propulsion Systems: Shafts and hubs requiring high fatigue resistance
- Valve Bodies & Stems in oil, gas, and water infrastructure
- Heavy Machinery: Wear plates and structural parts needing high strength + moderate corrosion resistance
Ordering Guidance
- Heat Treatment Condition: Specify H1025 for general use; H1150D for low-temperature or high-toughness needs.
- Ultrasonic Testing: Mandatory for thick sections (>50 mm) per IEC 60303 or customer-specific standards.
- Welding Procedure: Use low-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., ENiCrFe-3) and preheat to 150–200°C; PWHT recommended for critical joints.
- Dimensional Tolerances: EN 10029 Class A or tighter for precision fit-up.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A: Nearly identical in composition and performance. CA6NM (J91540) is the cast version (per ASTM A743/A744), while S41500 is the wrought plate grade (ASTM A240). For forged or rolled plate, S41500 is the correct designation.
A: Not recommended for long-term seawater exposure due to risk of pitting. Use super austenitic (e.g., 904L) or duplex (2507) grades instead.
A: Yes—when supplied in H1150D condition with hardness ≤22 HRC, S41500 meets NACE requirements for sour service.
A: Typically 7–14 days from order confirmation, including testing and certification.
