430 Stainless Steel Introduction
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. Known for its good corrosion resistance and formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties, it can be used in various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically provided in bar form for automatic screw machines, while grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, offer excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 provides good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance similar to grade 304. Corrosion resistance is maximized in well-polished or buffed condition.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. Proper annealing can overcome brittleness that may occur when heated in the 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing is performed by heating to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) and quick air-cooling. Sub-critical annealing involves heating to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) followed by air-cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F) is required for welding. Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) can address embrittlement. Recommended filler rods include grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on application requirements.
Machining & Fabrication
Grade 430 offers easier machinability than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. The low work hardening rate enables easy bending and forming, while the low ductility rate limits rigorous operations. Grade 430F provides enhanced machinability.
Applications
  • Dish washer linings
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Element supports and fasteners
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Automotive trim and lashing wires
