Grade 321 / 321H Stainless Steel Technical Overview
321 stainless steel is a titanium-stabilized austenitic grade specifically designed for high-temperature service in the 1000-1600°F (538-871°C) range. The titanium addition prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding and high-temperature exposure.
For optimal performance in temperatures up to 1600°F, a stabilizing heat treatment at 1550-1650°F followed by air cooling is recommended to provide maximum resistance to intergranular corrosion and polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking.
This grade offers excellent weldability using all common methods including submerged arc welding. Recommended filler materials include AWS ER347 bare wire and E347 covered electrodes. Machinability is comparable to 304 stainless steel with a rating of 45% relative to AISI B1112.
