Introduction to 430 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. This steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, superior formability, and practical mechanical properties, making it suitable for various chemical applications.

Grade 430F stainless steel is typically provided in bar form for use in automatic screw machines, while grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance

All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, offer excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 provides good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum performance achieved in well-polished or buffed conditions. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304.

Heat Resistance

Stainless steel grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. Proper annealing can overcome brittleness issues that may occur when heated for extended periods in the 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range.

Heat Treatment

Solution annealing is performed by heating to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) and rapid air-cooling. Sub-critical annealing involves heating to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) followed by air-cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Welding

Welding requires pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F). For embrittlement in welded metal, post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) is recommended. Grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 filler rods should be used based on application requirements.

Machining & Fabrication

Grade 430 offers easier machinability than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. The low work hardening rate enables easy bending and forming, while the low ductility rate limits rigorous operations. Grade 430F provides enhanced machinability.

Applications
  • Dish washer linings
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Element supports and fasteners
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Automotive trim and lashing wires
