Material Description
About 304/304L Stainless Steel
AISI 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400) is the most widely used stainless steel, containing 18-20% Cr and 8-10.5% Ni, and also known as 18-8 stainless steel. SS 304 is non-magnetic under annealing conditions, but may become weakly magnetic after cold working processes such as stamping, stretching, bending, or rolling. Type 304 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation. The high nickel-chromium alloy content provides superior corrosion resistance, making it widely used in the food industry as a standard food grade stainless steel.
Variants of 304 grade stainless steel include the ultra-low-carbon 304L, nitrogen-containing 304N, 304H with improved creep performance, and type 302 with higher carbon content. Compared to AISI 304, 316 grade stainless steel features reduced chromium content, increased nickel content, and the addition of 2-3% molybdenum. This molybdenum addition enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides, making 316 SS ideal for marine applications.
