About 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel, immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). The austenitic structure provides excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
Difference Between 316 and 316L
Both 316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum-containing alloys. 316L stainless steel has slightly higher molybdenum content and a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, making it suitable for applications that cannot be annealed after welding and require maximum corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel offers good resistance to chloride attack, making it ideal for marine environments.
