About 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel, providing immunity from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over approximately 6mm). The austenitic structure gives these grades excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
316 vs 316L Comparison
Both 316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum-containing alloys with 316L having slightly higher molybdenum content. This enhanced composition provides superior overall performance compared to 310 and 304 stainless steels. 316L stainless steel features a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, making it ideal for applications requiring maximum corrosion resistance where post-weld annealing is not possible.
