About 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel and is immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). There is commonly no appreciable price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
Difference Between 316 and 316L
Both 316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum-containing stainless steels. 316L stainless steel has a slightly higher molybdenum content than 316 stainless steel. The molybdenum content provides better overall performance compared to 310 and 304 stainless steels. 316 stainless steel has good resistance to chloride attack, making it suitable for marine environments. 316L stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, making it ideal for applications that cannot be annealed after welding and require maximum corrosion resistance.
