Stainless steel grade 409L is a general chromium, titanium stabilized, ferritic stainless steel primarily designed for automotive exhaust systems. With 11% chromium content - the minimum required for forming the passive surface film that provides corrosion resistance - this alloy combines excellent elevated temperature corrosion resistance with medium strength, good formability, and competitive cost efficiency.
409L stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel and serves as an effective alternative in moderately challenging environments where its high resistance to corrosion and high-temperature oxidation provides significant advantages. This material is commonly selected for applications where mechanical properties and corrosion resistance take priority over aesthetic appearance.
