Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel contains added copper to improve resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulphuric acid. The steel offers excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion, and is non-magnetic with superior formability, toughness, and weldability.
Key Features of Grade 904L
  • Non-magnetic properties
  • Stronger corrosion resistance than Type 316L and 317L
  • Excellent resistance to sulphuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids
  • High resistance to crevice and stress corrosion cracking
  • Superior formability and weldability

Grade 904L stainless steels provide excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content contributes to superior stress corrosion cracking resistance, while copper addition enhances resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions.
Typical Application Areas
  • Cooling equipment for seawater
  • Chemical processing of sulphuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids
  • Heat exchangers and condenser tubes
  • Gas washing systems
  • Control and instrumentation
  • Oil and gas industry equipment
  • Pharmaceutical production
  • Wiring in electrostatic precipitators
