S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo Two-Phase Stainless Steel Overview
High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provide 254SMO with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper additions enhance acid corrosion resistance. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Extensive field testing confirms 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. In acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments common in paper bleaching processes, 254SMO demonstrates corrosion resistance comparable to premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to standard austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallographic Structure
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Standard annealing at 1150-1200°C produces austenitic structure. While minor metal mesophase traces may appear in material centers, they typically don't adversely affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Grain boundary precipitation may occur at 600-1000°C.
Corrosion Resistance
Very low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. Passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. Superior to 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid and outperforms 904L in chloride-containing sulfuric acid. Suitable for diluted hydrochloric acid applications at normal temperatures. Maintains corrosion resistance across wide concentration and temperature ranges in fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acids.
