S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo Austenitic Stainless Steel Overview

High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provide 254SMO with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper addition enhances corrosion resistance in specific acidic environments. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.

Field tests confirm 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Its corrosion performance in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. High nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to standard austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallurgical Structure

254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Standard annealing at 1150-1200°C produces austenitic structure. Minor metal mesophase presence in material center typically doesn't affect impact strength or corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Performance

Very low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. Passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. Superior performance in chloride, bromide, and iodide solutions compared to conventional stainless steels. Excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid, outperforming 316 stainless steel. Suitable for diluted hydrochloric acid applications at room temperature.
