1. Introduction to 2507 Duplex Stainless Steel
2507 duplex stainless steel, also known as S32750, is a super duplex stainless steel. It has a balanced microstructure composed of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite, which endows it with excellent comprehensive properties.
In terms of mechanical properties, 2507 duplex stainless steel shows outstanding strength. Its tensile strength is ≥750 MPa, and the yield strength reaches ≥550 MPa, enabling it to withstand heavy loads and high - stress environments. Meanwhile, with an elongation of ≥25%, it maintains good ductility, facilitating various forming and processing operations. In low - temperature environments, it exhibits excellent notch ductility down to - 50 °C, effectively preventing brittle fracture.
When it comes to corrosion resistance, 2507 duplex stainless steel excels in multiple aspects. It has an extremely high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) typically ≥40.0. The high chromium (about 24 - 26%), molybdenum (3 - 5%), and nitrogen (0.24 - 0.32%) contents help form a stable passive film on its surface, protecting it from corrosion in harsh media. It also demonstrates remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride - and hydrogen sulfide - containing environments, and shows good uniform corrosion resistance in a wide range of acid, alkali, and salt solutions.
These excellent properties make 2507 duplex stainless steel widely used in the oil and gas industry for pumps, valves, and offshore pipeline systems; in the chemical processing industry for reactors and heat exchangers; and in marine applications for shipbuilding and offshore structures, as well as in other fields such as the paper and pulp industry, food and beverage industry, and desalination plants.
2. Comparison between 2507 and 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel
2.1 Chemical Composition
  • Chromium: 2507 duplex stainless steel contains 24 - 26% chromium, while 2205 duplex stainless steel has a chromium content of 22 - 23%. The higher chromium content in 2507 contributes to its better corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing environments.
  • Nickel: 2507 has a nickel content of 6 - 8%, and 2205 has 5 - 6.5% nickel. Nickel helps to stabilize the austenite phase in the microstructure, and the relatively higher nickel in 2507 further enhances its corrosion resistance and toughness.
  • Molybdenum: 2507 contains 3 - 5% molybdenum, and 2205 has 3 - 3.5% molybdenum. Molybdenum improves the resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and the slightly higher molybdenum in 2507 gives it an edge in these aspects.
  • Nitrogen: 2507 has a nitrogen content of 0.24 - 0.32%, and 2205 has 0.14 - 0.22% nitrogen. Nitrogen strengthens the material and also enhances its corrosion resistance, making 2507 more robust in this regard.
2.2 Mechanical Properties
  • Strength: 2507 generally has higher tensile and yield strengths. Its tensile strength is ≥750 MPa, and the yield strength is ≥550 MPa, while 2205 has a tensile strength of ≥620 MPa and a yield strength of ≥450 MPa. This means 2507 can bear greater loads and mechanical stress, making it more suitable for applications with higher strength requirements.
  • Toughness: Both grades have good toughness, but 2507 may offer slightly better low - temperature toughness, especially in extremely cold conditions, due to its chemical composition and microstructure.
2.3 Corrosion Resistance
  • Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: 2507 has a higher PREN (usually ≥40.0) compared to 2205 (with a PREN of around 32 - 34), indicating that 2507 has superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. This makes 2507 more suitable for highly corrosive environments such as offshore oil and gas platforms with high chloride concentrations.
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking: 2507 also shows better resistance to stress corrosion cracking in harsh environments containing chlorides and hydrogen sulfide. Its microstructure and chemical composition enable it to withstand the combined effects of stress and corrosion more effectively than 2205.
In conclusion, 2507 duplex stainless steel offers enhanced performance in terms of strength and corrosion resistance compared to 2205 duplex stainless steel. However, the choice between the two depends on the specific requirements and operating conditions of different applications.
