AR500 ABRASION-RESISTANT STEEL
AR500 abrasion resistant steel plate offers high surface hardness for excessive wear and high-impact applications.
WHAT IS AR500 STEEL?
AR500 is a grade of abrasion resistant (AR) steel plate that is known for its hardness, toughness, and resistance to wear and tear. This grade has one of the highest levels of hardness out of the common AR steel plate grades - with a Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) of between 460-544 - and is typically used in high-wear and impact applications. AR500 steel plate meets ASTM E10 specifications for Brinell hardness testing.
Overview:
- Abrasion resistant steel plate grade used in high-wear applications, such as in mining equipment and concrete handling.
- Surface hardness can range between 470-540 BHN.
- Possesses excellent resistance to slide wear, rub wear and heavy wear.
- Can withstand high-impact stresses, even at extremely low temperatures.
- Composition and hardening processes differ between mills. Mill test reports are supplied with each order.
Benefits of AR500 Steel
The hardness and toughness of AR500 steel plate make it extremely resistant to wear and impact. These properties make AR500 steel a durable, long-lasting material, which is crucial in applications that require materials that can withstand extreme wear.
The durability of AR500 also means that the material needs to be replaced less often than materials that have lower resistance to abrasion, which can lower material costs and prevent devastating equipment failures.
Available Sizes
Leeco® Steel stocks the following standard sizes of AR500 steel plate, but other sizes may be available for special orders.
THICKNESS | WIDTH | LENGTH | |
AR500 | 3/16" – 2" | 48" – 96" | UP TO 480" |
What's the different between AR400 and AR500?
The major difference is impact resistance. AR500 has higher abrasion resistance, but AR400 has higher impact resistance. That sounds the same to me, but it isn’t. Let’s break it down with a real-world situation.
I work at a rock quarry, AR400 Steeland I’m looking to line different pieces of equipment with abrasion resistant steel plate. I have a fleet of dump trucks, and the bed of the trucks are usually lined with removable bed liners. The beds take a lot of impact when the rocks fall into the bed after being excavated, so I need something that will hold up and will be less likely to shatter from the falling rocks. I’m going to choose AR400 plate for this because AR400 is really good for projects with high impact compared to AR500. Since AR400 plate is softer than AR500 plate, it can withstand more impact without cracking or shattering.
AR500 steel because the rocks are just sliding down instead of being thrown or dropped onto it. AR500 steel can withstand the abrasion that the rocks cause by sliding better than the AR400 steel, meaning it would last longer.
