EN 1.4418 (also known as X4CrNiMo16-5-1 and domestic grade 04Cr16Ni5Mo) is a premium low-carbon martensitic stainless steel round bar engineered to deliver an exceptional balance of high strength, superior toughness, and outstanding corrosion resistance. Notably, its chloride stress corrosion resistance is three times that of 304 stainless steel, with an annual corrosion rate of less than 0.1mm in 10% sulfuric acid. The pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) of approximately 28 further confirms its excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments.
Heat Treatment & Processing Performance
 
Heat Treatment Process
 
The performance of EN 1.4418 is closely linked to proper heat treatment, with quenching and tempering as the core processes to adjust its microstructure and properties:
Quenching: Heat to 1020-1100℃, followed by oil cooling or air cooling. This process fully transforms austenite into martensite, laying the foundation for high strength and refining grains.
Tempering: Hold at 480-620℃ for 4-6 hours, then cool. This step eliminates quenching residual stress, adjusts the structure to balance strength and toughness, and avoids brittleness caused by prolonged holding around 475℃.
Processing & Welding
 
The alloy supports both hot and cold working, though cold working exhibits a high work hardening rate that requires controlled deformation. For machining, cemented carbide tools are recommended, paired with medium-speed cutting and efficient cooling to ensure surface quality. In terms of welding, TIG/MIG processes are preferred, with preheating at 100-250℃ and 1.4430 welding wire. Moderate tempering after welding prevents structural brittleness, eliminating the need for complex post-heating processes.
