About 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel and is immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). There is commonly no appreciable price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
Difference Between 316 and 316L
Both 316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum-containing stainless steels. The molybdenum content in 316L stainless steel is slightly higher than that of 316 stainless steel. Due to the molybdenum content, the overall performance of these steels is better than 310 and 304 stainless steel. 316 stainless steel has good resistance to chloride attack, making it suitable for marine environments. 316L stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which makes it ideal for applications that cannot be annealed after welding and require maximum corrosion resistance.
