Material Overview
34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel is a heat treatable, low alloy steel used for a wide range of engineering parts. It is capable of being heat treated to produce a typical tensile strength of 1000-1200 N/mm², combined with good ductility and resistance to shock. This material features excellent hardenability, enabling it to be used for medium tensile strengths in fairly large sections, and attain good wear resistance with excellent impact properties at low temperatures.
Key Features
- Readily machinable for cost-effective component production
- Available in annealed condition for increased machinability
- Typically supplied hardened and tempered with hardness 28-34HRC
- Good hardenability for large section applications
- Excellent wear resistance and low-temperature impact properties

Heat Treatment Process
Quenched and Tempered (Q+T) Process
- Heat 34CrNiMo6 round steel slowly to 850°C
- Soak at hardening temperature and quench in oil
- Temper as soon as steel reaches room temperature
- Heat uniformly to suitable temperature
- Withdraw from furnace and cool in air
- Usual tempering temperature is 600°C (depending on requirements)
Additional Processing Information
Forging:
Hot forming temperature: 1100-900°C
Machinability:
Best machined in annealed or normalized and tempered condition. Can be machined by all conventional methods.
Welding:
Can be fusion or resistance welded. Preheat and post heat weld procedures should be followed using established methods.
Applications
EN DIN 34CrNiMo6 steel is used to manufacture tools requiring good plasticity and high strength. It is typically selected for large-size critical components including:
- Heavy machinery axles
- Turbine shaft blades
- High load transmission parts
- Fasteners and crank shafts
- Gears and heavily loaded motor construction parts
